Silent crimes

February 10, 2009

Its not as if you can really know everyone on the planet but do you have to know people to feel for them? To understand them? To feel that they deserve the same freedoms as you enjoy? Africa is so far away and what is happening in the Cong is just difficult to believe.

Not because its happening because people have been doing evil things throughout history, since before we walked upright and evolved into clothes wearing monkeys without so much fur. Well, some of us still bare the history of our furry ancestors. People, suck, in general and more specifically when we can either exploit a weaker person for our own gain or can ignore that being done to someone else because we can and its less difficult to ignore it than do something about it.

There is this movie that everyone should see. I want to know why this story is not on the news here in the USA every night? Why aren’t we talking about the systemic dehumanization of millions of women and children through mutilation, terror and rape?

I know this snippet of life, – is this really living, in a country in Africa seems to far away to care about or do something about while we ride the wave of a new administration, fresh with a new face and one we have never seen before.

Its just dumb luck that i was born in the USA, white, female and in an area that wasn’t so poor or totally crime ridden (well, it wasn’t when I was little anyway). I could have been born in the Congo, I could be waiting for someone, anyone to give a shit about me. I could be waiting to be tortured and raped while I am pregnant, watch my husband die and be dismembered, I could live in pain, in fear and with nothing and no one to help me raise my children.

As women, we are all one.

What will you do today?

We privileged first-worlders have to constantly make the effort to remind ourselves of the horrors that are taking place elsewhere and have taken place so recently elsewhere that they still call post-traumatic stress flashbacks down the generations. It is so much easier to shut out eyes, to pretend it’s not there, it’s not our business, we can’t do anything about it anyway. Just witnessing is doing something. I know you know that.
