Parturition, positive feedback that does not kill you!

June 22, 2006

Parturition is a weird word..don't you think? Everything, it seems in medical jargon, is named after the person who discovered(?) it. BUT, if you are a nurse, you just learn what it is. Doctors learn the proper noun name, so nurses have to learn both or at-least they teach both? Hmmm.

So, birth. In case any of you were going to have sex in a male/female manner and you both, the participants, were thinking of not using birth control OR if you are reading this and find yourself knocked up, with a bun in the oven, growing a tiny penis and/or vagina in your uterus..here is what will happen, if you are lucky, after about 40 weeks or so of gestation.

This is kooky, so hold on to your hats!

I don't know and neither do I think anyone else for that matter knows WHY this course of events begins but it is known where it begins, the birthing process.

The fetal hypothalamus secretes releasing hormone called, c orticotropin which stimulates adrenocorticotropic secretion from the pituitary gland.

The ACTH causes the fetal adrenal gland (located on top of the kidney) to secrete greater amounts of cortical steroids which travel to the placenta, an disposable organ shared by mother and baby, via the umbilical cord.

The placenta reacts to this corticol steroid by leveling off progesterone secretion which causes estrogen and prostaglandin production to increase making the uterus more irritable.

The stretching of the uterus produces action potentials, actual electrical currents transmitted to the mothers hypothalamus.

The hypothalamus stimulated signals production of oxytocin from the posterior pituitary gland. Oxytocin causes the uterine smooth muscle,  the myeometrium,  to contract.

SO, the uterus contracts pushing on the baby, which causes the baby to push against the cervix which causes more action potential signals to the mothers hypothalamus to make more oxytocin making her myeometrium contract more. The more the baby presses on the cervix, the more oxytocin is made, making the baby press on the cervix more, ect…until the baby/babies come out, along with the human body's only disposable organ, the placenta.

And that happens because you have sex with someone at the time when ovulation has occured and you could make a potential person.

That is some crazy (insert excremental adjective…I am not swearing)!

BUT, you need a license to fish.
